Using straight zinc oxide in fertilizers and sprays means crop acidity can decompose the ZnO gradually providing a nutrient time-release. Crops can grow in sub-standard soil with up to a 3X bushel per acre increase in yield.

Zinc oxide is used in animal nutrition in prepared feeds.

ZnO forms parts of enzyme systems such as carbonic anhydrase (proper bone and eggshell formation), carboxypeptidase (liver function), and lactic dehydrogenase (skeletal muscle function).
